Riding Pinkie (Astipalaia)

 


2nd Sept 2018 (Astipalaia)

Spent the day - Sunday -  anchored in the quiet bay of Maltezana on the island of Astipalaia. We’ve spent the last 4 days here with Malu Kai and Cloud 9. Great company.

Went to the main town via bus one day, then on Mark and Alex’s tender the next - getting soaked on the return leg. 

The town is picturesque in the standard white and blues, and surrounds a nice enclosed harbour (where Peter & Eyvone & Woozle were moored) 

Had a couple of sundowning evenings on Cloud 9. Today went for a ‘last supper’ with Paul & Jill - all very nice, but slightly marred by Paul’s exacting standards of waiting staff. 

Said sad goodbyes - C9 heading back to Crete tomorrow, while we, with Malu Kai, head back to Kardamaina on Kos.

Have learnt so much from being around Paul & Jill - probably more so than Dave and Shirl - I always found Dave to be a little condescending when helping, and as such didn’t like to ask him things. (edit: its now 2021, and Dave's just Dave :)

Early start in the morning (5am) - night night.

Day 1. 10 Oct '23 Like two excited children on Christmas Day morning, we jumped from our bed as the sun came up. There’s an unfamiliar tingle fluttering in my stomach.. an air of anticipation.. What’s the reason for all this excitement? Has Santa been? Did it snow? No… Better than that: We’re going to Australia! We’d prepped the boat yesterday, checked out and provisioned. All that was needed to do this morning was slip the dock lines and glide out of the marina. This was a task made significantly easier as a couple of days ago Capt. Chez had decided to turn the boat around to be facing bow out. We’re away from the marina before 6am and on our way to Bundaberg. Within the first ten minutes, we had a visit from two dolphins - surely a good omen for our last passage (… again I must stress: I’m not one for omens and portents… I do however seem to keep mentioning them. Island Life (Grenada)

  I find myself in the frustrating situation of having written three days worth of diary, only to inadvertently delete it with a single mis-stroke of my finger. Well here’s the highlights of what you missed: - A typical Grenadian supermarket trip with three full paragraphs bemoaning the available food, and advising people crossing the Atlantic to stock up on provisions in Spain before they come. - Finally decided to buy a reliable outboard motor for the tender. - Finding and agreeing a good price on one from a nice South African cruiser called Chris. - A bus ride into St. George - …and getting my bank card gobbled up by an ATM whilst trying to withdraw the cash for the new outboard. There… we’re back up to date. I hope to be able to collect my bank card from the branch tomorrow morning after it’s cleared out of the machine overnight - fingers crossed. It’s tomorrow morning, or today as I now call it. I take another trip into town only to be told by a smiling apologetic bank clerk ...

Fun in FNQ (Magnetic Island - Cairns)

Charlie's appendix successfully removed by the excellent team at the Prince of Wales hospital in Randwick. The fallen palm tree in the garden was removed by Prompt Tree Services who were good to their name. I spent a wonderful week down south, with Charlie, who was taking it easy and recovering nicely. Daily jousting session with each other at Chess, Battleships and Scrabble. ….and all too soon, flew back up to the boat in Townsville. We’re easing ourselves back into it with a short trip from the marina over to Magnetic island. En-route we had a minor mishap: snagging the line from a yellow buoy as we entered Horseshoe Bay. Not a disaster by any means, however getting into the water to swim around and under the boat to free up the buoy, I see the words ‘No Swimming / Shark Danger’. This is not my idea of fun - once the boat was free, I rapidly exited the water keeping the panic and splashes to a minimum. Despite the circumstances - it’s nice to have a swim!
